Research Interest and expertise in the field of nutraceuticals and functional food
Research activity deals with the study of biological activities of natural compounds extracted from marine invertebrates, microalgae, and plants, including secondary products of agro-industry, with special interest in sustainable production processes through the use of neglected resources (e.g., jellyfish biomasses, production waste, byproducts), focusing also on action mechanisms (e.g., GJIC). Expertise: Extraction, Biochemical analyses, Cell biology, Confocal microscopy, cell cultures.

Facilities and equipments
CNR-ISPA of Lecce has well-equipped laboratory for matrix preparation, extraction and separation of proteinaceous and non-proteinaceous compounds from diverse biological matrices, raw material and foods (dryers, lyophilizer, grinders, blenders, etc). Chemistry and Biochemistry analytical laboratories equipped with HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography), GC, GC-MS (gas-chromatography and mass spectroscopy), FPLC, Medium-Pressure Liquid Chromatography Systems (NGC), Fluorescence Spectrofluorometer, Spectrophotometer Real Time PCR, etc. Microscopy laboratory equipped inter alia with Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy. Cell culture laboratory equipped with laminar airflow hoods, CO2 incubator, automated cell counting with fluorescent detectors, cryopreservation and storage of cell cultures lines; systems for cell culture maintenance and treatments with bioactive compounds on human cancer and non-cancer cell lines.
